The Ice Storm

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010
School is cancelled! We had a big ice storm come through with freezing rain, which was weird because it really wasn't that cold outside. (between 20 and 30 degrees) It was a normal morning just like any weekday...I got Jacob up first and got him breakfast then went downstairs to start to try to get the other two up. (It usually takes 3 to 4 times before I start threatening them with their lives). I started to make Jacobs lunch and then the phone rings. NO SCHOOL!! I noticed then that the school had tried to call my cell phone since 6:00 this morning. I was so mad at myself that I did not go to bed with my cell phone next to me. I COULD HAVE SLEPT IN! (if you can't tell yet, I really like my sleep. I blame it on the five kids and the last 11 years of sleepless nights.) Usually I try to sleep with my cell phone, especially if I know that school might be cancelled. Oh well, at least Jacob is such a good kid and quietly watched TV until everyone else got up...and I went back to bed for a couple hours. :)
Johns car was covered with about a 10th inch layer of ice when he got home from work this evening. Everything outside was covered in ice. Freezing rain is kinda crazy. When you hear it outside it makes like a crackling sound...very different from an AZ rainstorm.

We were all advised to stay home and off the roads, but I was going stir crazy and had to get out!! We live next to a popular pizza place (well popular to Iowans, I'm not quite a fan yet) called Happy Joe's. John had gotten a gift card for Christmas from work, so we decided to use it. We bundled up and slid through the parking lot. Even with my practice with ice skating I still almost slipped a couple times. :) The boys were especially excited about Happy Joe's because they had remembered that the last time we had gone they had sold big ice cream sundaes. Jacob was especially excited for a special clown sundae that he remembered. So they had all grabbed their own money in hopes of getting some ice cream. Well, apparently things have changed at Happy Joe's since the last time we were there. (which could have been more than a year ago, like I said, we are not quite fans). They no longer had ice cream sundaes!! OH NO!! It was the end of the world! All boys were disappointed, but Jacob was the most. In fact, he wouldn't even eat. He even said to me, near tears, "Happy Joe's is NOT making me Happy!!" I promised Jacob I would make him a special "clown" sundae at home AND it would be better than what he would've gotten.
Bekah enjoyed Happy Joe's!
Jacob's Clown Sundae
(I was pretty impressed with myself) :)
It made him feel "Happy" again!!
Quote of the Day: We were handing out drinks to the kids at Happy Joe, and we were short a cup. We handed out the drinks to everyone except Luke, and then Luke said, as clear as can be "OH MAN!!" We all started cracking up laughing, because this came from the kid who usually communicates by squealing like a baby pig. I really think he CAN talk, he just chooses not to.
